Western Montana Guided Fly Fishing Trips
Joe Cantrell Outfitting offers owner-led guided fly fishing trips on three Western Montana rivers:
Each trip is built around current river conditions and the kind of day you want on the water.
Some anglers want instruction throughout the day. Others prefer to fish with minimal coaching. Either approach works.
The goal is simple: match the day to the river and fish it well.
Trip Options
Full-Day Float Trip
Most trips are full-day floats.
A typical day includes several hours on the water floating productive sections of river, adjusting techniques as conditions change.
Full-day trips give us time to cover water, adapt to insect activity, and fish different types of structure throughout the day.
Best suited for
anglers visiting Montana
anglers wanting a full river experience
anglers fishing larger rivers like the Clark Fork or Bitterroot
Walk & Wade Trip
Walk and wade trips are usually scheduled on smaller water such as the St. Regis when conditions allow.
These trips focus on working specific sections of river carefully and methodically.
They can be a good fit for anglers who enjoy technical fishing and a slower pace.
Best suited for
anglers who enjoy smaller rivers
anglers comfortable wading
anglers wanting a quieter experience
Guided trips include:
professional guide service
drift boat (for float trips)
rods and reels if needed
flies selected for current conditions
shuttle logistics
lunch and drinks
You’re welcome to bring your own gear if you prefer.

What to Bring
For larger groups, I coordinate trips with a small group of trusted guides who know these rivers and operate to the same standard.
This allows us to run multi-boat trips while maintaining a consistent guiding approach.
If you’re planning a group trip, we can talk through timing and river options.
Multi-Boat & Group Trips
The best river for a trip often depends on conditions.
Flow levels, clarity, and weather can all influence which river will fish best during a given week.
Before your trip, I keep an eye on those variables and help decide where we’ll have the best opportunity.
Choosing the Right River
If you’re planning to fish Western Montana, give me a call and we’ll talk through timing, river choice, and what you’re hoping to get out of the day.
Simple conversation. Clear plan.
