HUNTING REPORT
Date: 1/6/2012
Pitch black raining like hell we had climbed hard for an hour. The rain persisted when a bull bugled, between the rain and wind he was hard to locate. The bull bugled again and then again we realized there were two bulls they were across the canyon from us. Down the mountain we hurried in the dark and started climbing. In the bottom we couldn't here the bulls screaming my hunter worried the bulls had left. About 40 minutes later we heard a bull bugle it sounded a long way off my hunter was convinced the bull was moving away from us. The acoustics in the timber and ridges, draws, rain and wind can play hell with our hearing. I chirped with the cow call the bull answered seconds later. He was maybe 50 yds from us. I got my hunter set up backing him into a small fir tree I cow called lightly the bull screamed he was coming just above us not more than 25 yds. What happens in the next few seconds I would like to say I could have controlled. My hunter has his bow drawn when this cow comes running in stops about 15 feet from my hunter it whirls around crashing off taking the bull with her the hunt is over with these bulls.

Elk are making a come back in areas 200 and 202 we are seeing more elk this Spring than we have seen in the past 3 years. Fwp wiped out the Dry Creek wolf pack using a helicopter after the wolves killed 4 miniature horses. We are not seeing the number of wolves after our wolf kill seasons. We counted 174 elk on baldy, 84 head in cold creek, 86 head in Henderson,206 in Flat rock. The snow is still to deep to get over on the ST Joe to see what was happening there. The same on the Thompson Falls side . We have a large number of elk from these two areas that drift back into 200 and 202 and stay through November.
